Trompe-l’oeil in Montpellier

Trompe-l’oeil (in French: ‘deceive the eye’) is an art technique that makes use of sensible imagery to create optical illusions. It can trace its origins again to Greek and Roman situations. For instance, some awesome illustrations had been found in Pompeii. I have found illustrations of it throughout France, but also in several monasteries, church buildings and abbeys in southwestern Europe. In Montpellier, large trompe-l’oeil murals can be observed in the aged town and in the neighbourhoods of Rondelet and Saint Roch.
