Getting to Lucerne Switzerland
The best way to get to Lucerne is by flying to Zurich International Airport, which is one of the largest airports in Switzerland. It is also the hub of SwissAir.
You can book a direct flight to Zurich from your home city in the US or Canada.
Once you are in Zurich, you can take the train to get to Lucerne.
From Zurich Hauptbahnhof, it will take less than an hour’s ride to Lucerne.
We recommend getting the Swiss Travel Pass so that you have unlimited public transportation rides for the duration of your Switzerland itinerary. The same pass also allows you entry to 500 museums for free.
Alternatively, if you staying in Zurich, there are guided day tours that you have to take to get to Lucerne. These excursions also include sightseeing and the iconic Mt Pilatus stop.
Getting around Lucerne
The city centre of Lucerne is best explored on foot or by boat, as the small streets and picturesque harbor are not open to cars.

Now, let’s go over the Lucerne one day itinerary in detail. This itinerary assumes that you are in Lucerne the night before, or starting early morning for a day trip to Lucerne from Zurich.
Trains start as early as 06:00 am and take an hour.
The S-Bahn or train station is located just a few steps away from the Old Town and the shores of Lake Lucerne.
Soak in the city views from Promenade Luzern or Lake Lucerne promenade
Lucerne is home to one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland – Lake Lucerne, and it is surrounded by stunning mountains.
The lake is the fourth largest in the country and covers an area of 113.6 square kilometres. In order to enjoy Lake Lucerne and the charming city views, go on a walk along its shores.
You can get to the lake promenade from the Lucerne train station – it is located right across it.
Once there, you can go on a stroll, pick up some snacks and take in the view.
During our trip, there was a huge fun fair going on, and it was perfect to kick in sightseeing in Lucerne.
Take a boat tour on Lake Lucerne
Lake Lucerne is huge. What you see in Lucerne is just a portion of it (with the River Reuss and lower Lake Lucerne).
The area around Lake Lucerne is known for its beautiful nature and is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers. It also offers many activities such as boating and swimming.
There are many ways to explore Lake Lucerne, and the best and easy way is to hop on a boat tour from the city.
The dock operates boat and ferry trips for sightseeing. The main dock for boat tours is located by the Lake promenade.
Typically boat trips are for an hour, and you get to see the city of Lucerne and the surrounding mountains.

Admire and cross the Chapel Bridge aka Kapellbrücke
Lucerne is home to the world’s oldest wooden covered bridge, the Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge).
Chapel Bridge is renowned for its impressive length, but it’s the stunning painted triangular frames on the roof of this walkway that truly make it exceptional.
Depicting important events, these pictures tell stories from Lucerne’s glorious past – from St. Leger’s life and death to legends about St Maurice who was one of their patron saints.
The bridge was built in 1360, but it was partially destroyed by fire in 1993. It was rebuilt in 1994.
Due to the fire, a lot of the 17th-century paintings were lost. Out of the 158, only 30 were fully restored.
The tower that you see is the Wasserturm (or the water tower). And the water body is the Reuss river which runs from Lake Lucerne to the confluence with the Aare.
The Chapel Bridge is one of the most recognizable symbols of Lucerne and Switzerland.
Take the time to walk across the bridge and admire the scenes from Swiss history – they are pretty, and so are the views from the bridge.
In and around the bridge, there are side cafes where you can hang out.
Visit a museum such as Sammlung Rosengart Museum or the Swiss Transport Museum
Before heading for lunch stop by a museum in Lucerne Old Town. We will share two options – you can do both, or just pick one – depending on how much time you have left for the day.
Sammlung Rosengart Museum
The Sammlung Rosengart Museum or Rosengart Collection Museum is located just 3-minute walking distance from the Chapel Bridge.
This art museum is home to a vast collection of modern artwork from two renowned artists: Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso.

Swiss Museum of Transport
The Swiss Museum of Transport is a unique museum that showcases the past, present, and future of all things transportation – planes, trains, buses – you name it! This museum was opened in 1959.

Enjoy lunch in a cafe with views
Now get ready for some lunch! Lucerne is home to many wonderful cafes, where you can enjoy a delicious lunch with stunning views of the city.
There are many cafes in and around the Chapel Bridge, Seebrücke (2 minutes away from the Chapel Bridge), and Rathaussteg in Old Town.
We sat down at Fisher-Stube, which offers an amazing view of the city and the Reuss river. Their menu features classic Swiss cuisine as well as lighter fare such as salads and sandwiches.
After your meal, take a walk along the lake and marvel at the stunning views.
Wander the charming Old Town Area and the City Walls
From the views of the river, make your way to the city interiors and see its ancient fortifications and walls.
As you wander along you will find cobblestone lanes, charming cafes and shops, and fountains scattered all across town.
Plan to get to the Musegg wall and its nine towers to soak in the stunning views of Lucerne and nearby areas.
The Musegg wall is regarded to be one of the best-preserved medieval walls in the country. The wall was built in the 13th century as a defensive fortification to protect the town of Lucerne.
Today you can walk the walls with or without a guide. To complete the entire loop it will take one hour and 30 minutes. You can also choose sections and return halfway if you like.
Since it requires walking on uneven surfaces ensure you are wearing comfortable hiking shoes.

Visit the Lion Monument of Lucerne – Löwendenkmal or the Dying Lion Monument
The iconic Lion Monument is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Lucerne, and it is located right outside the Old Town of Lucerne.
It will take about a 10-minute walk to get there from the city walls.
This monument commemorates the Swiss Guards who died defending King Louis XVI during the French Revolution.
It is free to visit the monument, which is nestled in a rocky grotto in a scenic park.

After checking off the Lion Monument, head back to the city center to spend the remainder of your day in Lucerne.
Church of St. Leodegar
Back in the Old Town make a stop at the Hofkirche St. Leodegar. This is a Roman Catholic church with two impressive bell towers.
St. Leodegar was founded in the mid-8th century, and as part of the monastery it in a way led to the foundation of the city itself. Much of the original building is gone and what you see today belongs to the 17th century.
The church architecture and presence are unmissable in Lucerne’s beautiful cityscape.

Another noteworthy church is the Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche) located a few steps away from the Chapel Bridge.
Go souvenir shopping in Old Town
Shopping in Lucerne is an adventure. The city is home to a variety of shops that offer everything from traditional Swiss souvenirs to designer fashion items.
Lucerne is known for its delicious chocolate, and the city is home to several famous chocolatiers that have been in business for over 100 years.

For more modern items, visit nearby Neustadt (the ‘new town’) where you’ll find high-end boutiques from international designers.

At night, the city comes alive and you can take advantage of the vibrant restaurant and bar scene to enjoy some traditional Swiss cuisine and a few drinks with friends.
Try fondue and rosti in one of the restaurants before calling it a night!
Alternate One day Lucerne and Mount Pilatus itinerary
The Lucerne one day itinerary above focused on the city without venturing into the Swiss Alps.
But the area surrounding Lucerne is full of incredible hiking trails, and gorgeous mountain scenery so you can surely add that to your day trip itinerary by making a few changes.
- Plan to arrive in Lucerne by one of the earliest trains
- Once in Lucerne join this 4.50-hour tour that covers lakeside sightseeing as well as takes you on a cable car ride to Mt Pilatus (and back)
- Then set aside the afternoon to visit 1-2 museums, have lunch at a local cafe, go shopping, and enjoy an evening stroll by the lake shore/cross the Chapel Bridge.

The best time to visit Lucerne is in the late spring and summer months. The weather is usually warm and sunny, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
While winter can be cold and snowy, it also offers a unique atmosphere with its snow-capped mountains and icy lakes.
Shoulder months like April, May, September, and October are also great times to visit Lucerne as the weather is mild but still offers plenty of sunshine.
