Concierge Guide to Northeast Florida Bike Trails and Cycling Routes

A1A Coastal Route – Mayport to New Smyrna Beach (110 mi overall)

This A1A coastal Route runs from the Mayport Ferry down to New Smyrna Seashore. There is some route obtaining associated, in particular from Mayport to Atlantic Beach front, as a result of St. Augustine, and from Ormand Seashore to New Smyrna Beach front. Of all the rides in this guide, this one will require the most rider encounter and judgement. We have broken it up sections to make it easier to digest and integrated images together the route.

I commenced with the concluded sections of the St. Johns River to Sea Loop and crammed in with MapMyRide and Google Maps recommendations. It is challenging, so I bundled my MyMyRide route as a start out, but I recommend you double-test the River2SeaLoop In which To Journey Now web page for updates in advance of placing out and using your very best judgment when riding here.

The Sections for the A1A Coastal Route are:

  • Mayport to St Augustine (38.1 mi)
    • Mayport to Ponte Vedra (11.2 mi)
    • Ponte Vedra Blvd (7.1 mi)
    • Mickler’s Landing to St Augustine (20.1 mi)
  • St Augustine to East Central Rail Path / Edgewater (69.8 mi)
    • St Augustine to North Peninsula State Park (37.3 mi)
    • North Peninsula State Park to East Central Rail Path (32.5 mi)

Mayport to St Augustine (38.1 mi)

Mayport to Ponte Vedra (11.2 mi): We’ll start on the north end of the Mayport to New Smyrna Seashore route. The Mayport Ferry runs each and every 1/2 hour, which features transit and unloading occasions, so really do not get way too hung up over preparing the passage. (notice: The Mayport Ferry from time to time closes for upkeep for the duration of the winter season.  Examine the Jacksonville Transit Web site for present-day status. The alternate route is hazardous -105 to Dames Place Bridge (I-295) to Route 116. Severely look at using a car shuttle until eventually the ferry is operational once more.)

The bike lanes are very great heading out of Mayport, and there are even some water views of the St Johns as you turn the corner at Sherman Issue. For the next mile or so, until eventually the junction with 116, you may possibly not even have a car or truck driving you if you wait for the pulse of website traffic to depart from the ferry, but then items start off to get bushy.

Following 116 bike lanes get sometimes repurposed for switch lanes, and by the time A1A joins up with Mayport Street, they are all gone, and you are going to be using on the sidewalk for about a mile. Between the Navy assets and gated communities, the very first possibility to strike out on a neighborhood bypass is Maritime Oak Generate. This wiggly route takes you to Ocean Blvd/ 1st St, which is quite enjoyable riding with a seaside town vibe but no real views. Make your way down First / Duval until eventually you get to Ponte Vedra Blvd.

Ponte Vedra Blvd (7.1 mi): While there are not bicycle lanes below, driving on sluggish / minimal-website traffic roadways through an ‘Old Money’ portion of Florida is truly enjoyable. The residences and gardens on the southern conclusion are specially glorious.

It is wonderful to slash by Mickler’s Landing northbound and most likely southbound as perfectly. Despite the fact that, depending on targeted traffic, you could possibly want to utilize the mild at Ponte Vedra / A1A to cross the highway.

Mickler’s Landing to St Augustine (20.1 mi): This is possibly the single most pleasant section of the total experience. There are bicycle lanes during, small cross traffic, and attractive dunes by means of the Guana Tolomato Matanzas Protect.

The elevated Francis and Mary Usina Bridge from Vilano Seaside also provides you amazing sights of St Augustine and the harbor. Be sure to look at out the Historic District rides for alternate scenic routes by the city or stops together the way.
